Baia – Italian submerged Atlantis

Bacoli, Campania

Baia Submerged Park

An underwater archaeological reserve preserving Roman coastal settlements submerged by volcanic subsidence over two millennia.

At a glance

Baia Submerged Park is a protected marine area spanning the coasts north of the Gulf of Naples. Established in 2002, it forms part of the broader Campi Flegrei park and represents a unique fusion of archaeological and naturalistic protection. The site protects submerged Roman structures alongside its marine and coastal ecosystems, making it among Italy’s most distinctive underwater heritage zones.

History

Around the first century BC, the coastal area north of Naples flourished as an exclusive health resort favored by Roman elites. The region’s prestige was enhanced by the presence of imperial villas, including the celebrated Pausilypon—built by wealthy freedman Publius Vedio Pollione—which lent its name to the Posillipo Promontory.

The site’s dramatic transformation resulted from bradyseism, a volcanic phenomenon causing repeated vertical ground movements. Over the past 2,000 years, the Roman coastline sank approximately 6 to 8 meters, submerging once-thriving settlements beneath the Gulf of Naples. This geological process continues to shape the landscape and has created conditions ideal for archaeological study and marine preservation.

What you see

The submerged park reveals Roman structures, mosaics, and architectural remnants preserved on the seafloor. Visitors encounter ruins of villas, harbors, and domestic spaces that document the region’s prosperity during the imperial period. The underwater landscape, modified by volcanic subsidence and marine life colonization, offers insight into both human settlement patterns and natural processes reshaping coastal environments.

Cultural significance

Baia exemplifies how geological forces reshape cultural memory and material heritage. The site documents the intersection of Roman urban life and natural disaster, while its designation as a protected area reflects contemporary commitment to underwater archaeology. Together with the adjoining Gaiola marine park, it represents a model for integrated protection of submerged archaeological sites and living marine ecosystems.
