The Date family arrived in Uwajima in 1615. Date Hidemune, son of the famed one-eyed daimyō Date Masamune, became the first lord of this southern branch. Centuries of governance left behind letters, portraits, and heirlooms scattered across family storehouses and temples. By the twentieth century, Uwajima’s civic leaders saw the need to consolidate this material. The museum opened in 1974 as a permanent home for the clan’s legacy.
