SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL · 20TH CENTURY

Urban Arts Gallery

A contemporary arts venue located in Vila Madalena, one of three neighbourhoods born from a nineteenth-century Portuguese farm divided among three daughters.

At a glance

Urban Arts Gallery operates in Vila Madalena, a São Paulo neighbourhood with deep historical roots. The district occupies land that was once part of a larger agricultural holding, subdivided into three named sections by a Portuguese farmer’s daughters.

History

The area around present-day Vila Madalena was originally known as Sítio do Buraco, a Portuguese-style farm owned by Gonçalo and worked by his three daughters: Albertina (youngest), Madalena (middle), and Beatriz (eldest). Each daughter claimed a section of the property, naming it after herself.

These three divisions evolved into three distinct neighbourhoods: Albertina, Beatriz, and Madalena. After 1945, Vila Albertina merged administratively with Madalena, forming a single district. The broader area began its transformation into a densely populated urban centre around 1900, as milk and vegetable farmers established themselves across the region.
