Overview

The Tour metallique crowns Fourviere’s ridge beside the basilica – an 85.9-metre iron lattice copied in spirit from Eiffel’s tower of five years before, and pointedly taller than its pious neighbour by republican design: Lyon’s anticlerical bourgeoisie subscribed it so that secular iron, not the church’s towers, would top the city’s skyline.

History

Opened for the 1894 exposition with a restaurant and lifts to the platform, the tower served sightseers until 1953, when television claimed it – the public closed out, the silhouette kept. Together basilica and pylon stage the century’s quarrel of faith and progress in one hilltop composition over the UNESCO-listed presqu’ile.

Architecture and Design

The pure pylon – four splayed legs, lattice shaft, no ornament – reads as the Eiffel’s summit section planted on the hill; night lighting pairs it with the basilica’s glow. Engineers prize its economy: a tenth the Paris tower’s iron for half its visual force.

Cultural significance

The tower belongs to Lyon’s skyline signature and to the Third Republic’s culture wars made visible – the laic exclamation mark beside Mary’s sanctuary, both now heritage together.

Visiting today

The tower is closed but approachable – the best views pair it with the basilica’s terrace panorama over the red roofs to the Alps. The funicular makes the climb effortless.

Getting there

The Fourviere funicular from Vieux Lyon station rises to the esplanade; the tower stands two minutes north along the ridge path.
