The Grand Mark Prague
A Leading Hotels of the World property set in the former Věžník Baroque palace on Hybernská, a few steps from náměstí Republiky.
At a glance
The Grand Mark Prague occupies the historic Věžníkovský (Věžník) palace at Hybernská 12 in Prague's New Town (Nové Město), a short walk from Republic Square and the Powder Tower. The Czech Monument Catalogue records a Baroque palace built on the site around 1700; the building was later raised and remodelled in Classicist style, and a Neoclassical reconstruction in the 1920s gave it its present form. It is a protected cultural monument (kulturní památka). The hotel opened here in 2008, preserving the palace's original facade and entrance and enclosing a large private courtyard garden.

History
The site of the Grand Mark sits within the area Charles IV laid out as Prague's New Town. According to the official Czech Monument Catalogue (Památkový katalog), two larger townhouses standing here from the 15th century were combined around 1700, when Count Věžník commissioned a Baroque palace, which became known as the palác U Věžníků or Věžníkovský palác. Over the following two centuries the palace passed through several noble families and was raised and reconstructed in Classicist style toward the end of the 19th century, becoming a tenement house. A major Neoclassical reconstruction in the 1920s expanded the building to its present multi-storey form. The structure is today protected as a cultural monument (kulturní památka). When it was converted for hotel use, the original palace facade and entrance gate were preserved and a large garden of roughly 1,800 m² was laid out in the courtyard. The Grand Mark Prague opened in 2008, restoring Neoclassical interior elements and combining them with contemporary art and design; it is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.
What you see
The preserved Baroque/Classicist palace facade and original arched entrance gate on Hybernská. Inside, a large private courtyard garden of about 1,800 m² forms a green refuge in the city centre, where herbs and vegetables are grown for the hotel restaurant; a sandstone fountain with a lion-head spout stands in the garden. Public rooms retain restored Neoclassical detailing and vaulted ceilings of the former private palace.
