The Gherardesca Garden

The Gherardesca Garden is a historic private park in the heart of Florence, hidden behind the walls of the Four Seasons Hotel Firenze. Laid out in the early 19th century for the noble Gherardesca family, it is one of the largest private gardens in the city centre and preserves rare botanical specimens, neoclassical statuary, and a romantic English-style landscape design that makes it an exceptional survivor of aristocratic Florentine garden culture.

Overview

Concealed behind high stone walls along Borgo Pinti, the Gherardesca Garden extends over approximately four hectares in the historic centre of Florence — a rare expanse of green in a densely built urban fabric. Today it forms the private grounds of the Four Seasons Hotel Firenze, occupying the former Palazzo della Gherardesca. The garden is widely regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of 19th-century aristocratic park design in Tuscany.

History

The garden was laid out in the early decades of the 1800s for the Gherardesca family, one of the most powerful noble lineages of medieval Tuscany — the same family that gave Italian literature the tragic figure of Count Ugolino, immortalised by Dante in the Inferno. The original landscape design followed the English romantic fashion then sweeping European aristocratic taste, replacing formal Italian parterres with winding paths, specimen trees, and picturesque views. The property passed through several owners before its transformation into a luxury hotel in the 2000s, which included a careful restoration of the historic garden fabric.

What you see

Visitors encounter a layered landscape of centuries-old trees — including towering magnolias, cedars, and citrus groves — interspersed with neoclassical statues, a limonaia (lemon house), and ornamental water features. Gravel paths wind through themed areas, from a formal rose parterre to wilder wooded groves. The garden’s elevated pergola walkways offer views back over the roofline of the palazzo against the Florentine skyline, with the cupola of the Duomo visible in the distance on clear days.

Cultural significance

The Gherardesca Garden is a living document of aristocratic Florentine life and the 19th-century taste for English romantic landscape design. Its survival within the city centre — largely intact and expertly restored — makes it an irreplaceable example of the private green infrastructure that once characterised the quarters of noble Florentine families. Its connection to the Gherardesca lineage also links it to one of the most storied chapters of medieval Italian history and literature.
