Terme di San Pellegrino
Before the Grand Hotel or the Casino, Mazzocchi built the baths themselves — a Liberty bathing palace of 1901 with a half-open-air pool, the practical heart around which the resort grew.
At a glance
The thermal establishment was the first piece of San Pellegrino’s Belle Époque rebuild. The engineer Luigi Mazzocchi designed and built it between 1899 and 1901, with a large pool partly open to the sky and treatment rooms in a Liberty idiom. The original cures ended in 2006, and the building now holds exhibition spaces; a new thermal centre opened nearby in 2014.
Key facts
- Built: 1899–1901
- Engineer: Luigi Mazzocchi
- Style: Liberty (Italian Art Nouveau)
- Notable: a large swimming pool partly open to the sky
- Status: historic treatments closed in 2006; building reused for exhibitions; new spa (QC Terme) opened 2014
History
San Pellegrino’s transformation began with the water itself. When the bottling company formed in 1899, the town needed a modern bathing establishment to draw paying visitors, and Mazzocchi’s baths were built first, between 1899 and 1901, ahead of the hotel and casino that would frame them.
For more than a century the building delivered the cure that justified the whole resort. The historic treatments closed in 2006; the spaces were converted for exhibitions, and a new thermal facility opened a short distance away in 2014.
What you see
A long Liberty front along Viale della Vittoria, with the great pool hall set behind it. The decoration is quieter than the Casino’s but of a piece with it — the same floral vocabulary, the same Art Nouveau confidence.
The interiors now serve as galleries and event spaces, used through the year for cultural programmes.
