Széchenyi Palace, Timișoara
László Székely, Timișoara’s first chief architect, shaped the city’s new boulevard with palaces like this one — the Széchenyi, finished on the eve of the First World War.

The Széchenyi Palace stands on Piața Victoriei, the showcase boulevard laid out after Timișoara’s fortress walls came down. Designed by László Székely — the city’s first chief architect — it received its building permit in 1911 and was completed by 1913. It is a listed monument (LMI TM-II-a-A-06115).
History
When the military fortifications were demolished, Timișoara gained room for a modern centre. Székely, appointed chief architect in 1903, filled the new axis with apartment palaces for the city’s middle class. The Széchenyi went up among them in the last peaceful years before 1914, and has framed the square’s northern stretch ever since.
What you see
A large residential palace whose facade combines late-Secession surfaces with the more sober geometry that crept in after 1910. Bay windows mark the corners; ornament gathers around the entrances and the roofline. The ground floor has carried shops and cafés from the beginning.
Cultural significance
Székely’s boulevard palaces define how Timișoara looks today more than any single monument. The Széchenyi is one of the best preserved of the series, and its name — honouring the Hungarian reformer István Széchenyi — records the city’s pre-1918 world.

Practical information & getting there
Piața Victoriei runs between the Opera and the Orthodox cathedral; the palace sits along its eastern side. Facade visible at all times. The Opera, the cathedral and the Lloyd row are all within five minutes on foot.
