A monumental residential complex of 762 flats, Superjednostka stands as Poland’s largest apartment building at its completion. Designed by Mieczysław Król and inspired by Le Corbusier’s modernist ideals, it anchors Katowice’s postwar urban vision.
At a glance
Superjednostka is a 187-metre-long residential tower housing approximately 1,300 residents across 762 flats, alongside 17 business premises and 175 underground parking spaces. Located on Aleja Wojciecha Korfantego near the iconic Spodek arena, it forms a bold architectural dialogue with its modernist neighbour.
History
Completed in 1972 as Poland’s largest residential building, Superjednostka was conceived as an architectural counterpart to the Spodek arena across Jerzy Ziętek Square. The building’s innovative heating system—integrated into walls without visible radiators—emerged partly from practical necessity: key radiator components failed to arrive on time during construction, prompting the architect to embed climate control directly into the structure.
The exterior underwent comprehensive renovation from 2009 to 2010.
What you see
Designed by architect Mieczysław Król, Superjednostka draws inspiration from Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation modernist principles. The building covers 9,817 square metres and stretches 187 metres in length. Its compact flats—many featuring windowless kitchens—were conceived for couples without children and single professionals, reflecting the social housing priorities of 1970s Poland. The absence of traditional radiators distinguishes the interior, replaced by integrated wall heating.
Cultural significance
Superjednostka represents a defining moment in Polish postwar architecture and urban planning. As both a functional housing solution and a statement of modernist ambition, it demonstrates how practical constraints and visionary design could merge. The building epitomises Katowice’s transformation into an industrial metropolis with aspirational cultural infrastructure.
