Cathedral of San Lorenzo
Genoa’s metropolitan cathedral stands as the city’s foremost Catholic sanctuary, a Romanesque structure shaped by earthquakes, ambition, and successive rebuildings across six centuries.
At a glance
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo serves as the metropolitan cathedral of the Archdiocese of Genoa. Construction began in 1099 and the building was substantially completed by 1133, though the structure underwent major reconstruction following a 14th-century earthquake and continued to evolve through the 17th century.
History
San Lorenzo assumed the role of Genoa’s cathedral after 878, when the relics of Saint Romulus were transferred to the church. Pope Gelasius II consecrated the building to San Lorenzo in 1118, despite its incompleteness and missing façade.
Construction, which had begun in 1099, reached essential completion around 1133—the same year Pope Innocent II elevated the diocese to metropolitan status. Between 1222 and 1296, an earthquake and subsequent structural demands forced substantial reconstruction of the interior and exterior. The façade was rebuilt in front of the original at the beginning of the 14th century.
During the second half of the 17th century, the barrel vault of the nave and the choir were finally reconstructed, giving the cathedral much of its present character.
What you see
The cathedral exhibits Romanesque architecture with alterations spanning the medieval and early modern periods. The façade, rebuilt in the early 14th century after earthquake damage, faces the piazza. The interior features a barrel vault in the nave, reconstructed in the 17th century, and a rebuilt choir reflecting that same period’s design sensibilities.
Cultural significance
As Genoa’s principal place of Catholic worship and seat of the metropolitan archdiocese, San Lorenzo embodies the city’s religious identity. The cathedral’s architectural history mirrors Genoa’s transformation from independent medieval republic to a major Mediterranean power, with successive generations of builders responding to disaster and dynastic change.
