Stari Ras
A medieval fortress complex that served as one of the first capitals of the Serbian state, strategically positioned on ancient trading routes in southwestern Serbia.
At a glance
Stari Ras (Old Ras) is a fortress complex located roughly 10 kilometers west of Novi Pazar in the Raška region. Two distinct fortifications—Gradina-Pazarište and Gradina-Postenje—mark the site. The location commands major crossroads between neighboring regions, a factor that elevated its importance throughout the medieval period.
History
The fortress began as part of the Eastern Roman Empire before becoming a contested frontier stronghold between the First Bulgarian Empire and the Byzantine Empire. It eventually emerged as one of the primary capitals of the medieval Serbian state, cementing its role in regional politics. Below the fortifications, the marketplace settlement of Staro Trgovište developed during the late medieval period, later influencing Ottoman-era expansion eastward toward Novi Pazar.
What you see
The complex comprises two fortified gradina structures overlooking the former trading settlement. The archaeological site preserves the remains of these medieval defenses, with Staro Trgovište’s ruins visible in the lower terrain. Reconstruction efforts are planned for the future.
Cultural significance
Stari Ras embodies the strategic and cultural heart of early Serbian statehood. Its position at the intersection of trade routes made it a crossroads of medieval Balkan civilization. The site forms part of a remarkable concentration of religious monuments in the region.
