History
The theatre opened in 1937 as a commercial cinema for Invermay residents. It operated until 1969, when it closed as audiences shifted and cinema-going declined. The St. Vincent de Paul Society purchased the building in 1971 and converted it into a charity store, where it remained for over four decades.
In 2015, Andrew Quaile, Ben Davis and Paul Lee-Archer acquired the property and undertook restoration work. The cinema reopened on 6 April 2018 as an independent venue. Michael Smith, proprietor of the Sun Theatre in Yarraville, Victoria, purchased the Star Theatre in 2022.
