Overview

St Michael’s of Nkembo is Gabon’s most celebrated church not for its modern shell but for what holds it up: 31 columns of okoume and other Gabonese hardwoods, each carved with Old and New Testament scenes – Eden, the Flood, the Nativity rendered with African faces and Gabonese flora – the masterpiece of Zephyrin Lendogno, a carver who was blind, working the wood by touch.

History

Built in 1964 in newly independent Gabon, the church embodied the inculturation movement – Christianity expressed through African artistic language – ahead of its general adoption. Lendogno’s columns made Nkembo a pilgrimage of art as much as faith; the parish’s famous choir and drummed liturgy completed a wholly Gabonese Christianity that visitors from popes’ envoys to art historians have come to witness.

Architecture and Design

The broad gabled hall opens through lattice walls to the equatorial air; the structural columns become a sculptural bible for a once largely oral culture – reading the nave column by column narrates salvation history. The carving style joins Fang and Punu traditions to Christian iconography with total assurance.

Cultural significance

St Michael’s is Gabon’s artistic landmark and a key monument of post-independence African Christian art; Lendogno’s achievement – monumental narrative sculpture executed without sight – has entered the continent’s artistic legend.

Visiting today

Open daily; the Sunday High Mass with drums and the great choir is the experience of Libreville. Photography of the columns is welcomed outside services.

Getting there

Nkembo lies inland from Libreville’s seafront boulevard; taxis know the church by name – Eglise Saint-Michel de Nkembo.
