History
A church occupied this site from at least 1001, confirmed by documents in the Abbey of Pannonhalma archives. Fire in 1380 necessitated complete reconstruction in the Gothic style, completed by 1400 when the building was formally dedicated to St. Michael.
Turkish occupation brought partial destruction. Eighteenth-century restoration returned the cathedral to Romanesque and Gothic forms, while a major 1907–1910 campaign removed surviving baroque elements. The building became a centre for European musical life, hosting performances of works by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Pope John Paul II granted basilica status in 1981. In 1993, the cathedral received the relics of Queen Gisela from Niedernburg monastery, reinforcing its role as metropolitan cathedral.

Romanesque and Gothic features dominate the restored interior, the result of careful early twentieth-century intervention that stripped away baroque additions.
