History
The cathedral was built across three distinct phases. The first phase was completed in 1865, establishing the original structure. During the 1920s, architects drew up ambitious plans for a replacement—a larger Perpendicular Gothic edifice intended to supersede the existing cathedral. Construction began but halted abruptly with the Great Depression, leaving the work incomplete. For seven decades, the cathedral remained partially constructed, with sections deteriorating and requiring urgent repair. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, fundraising efforts succeeded in reviving the expansion project. A new curved design replaced the original Perpendicular Gothic plan, featuring a second spire and an underground parish centre. After closure in 2006 for major construction work, the cathedral reopened in December 2009.
