History
Bishop William Kinsella initiated the cathedral’s construction in February 1842, commissioning architect William Deane Butler. Building commenced in April 1843 and continued for fourteen years, concluding in 1857. The inaugural ceremony took place on Sunday, 4 October 1857, a solemn two-and-three-quarter-hour service beginning at 6:15 a.m. Construction costs reached approximately £25,000—a substantial sum for the period.
