The building endured severe damage during Allied bombing in World War II. Rather than restore it to its original form, architects chose modernization: the interior was comprehensively rebuilt between 1952 and 1963 in post-war modernist style as part of the broader reconstruction of the Forum Fridericianum. After a major renovation from 2018, the cathedral reopened on November 24, 2024, with contemporary interior design.
