History
Construction was completed in 1940. The courthouse initially housed the United States District Court for the Southern District of California until the district was redrawn in 1966, after which it functioned with judges from the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
The building gained lasting significance as the venue for Gonzalo Mendez et al v. Westminster School District of Orange County, et al—a watershed civil rights case advancing Mexican-American rights and anticipating the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision. Federal courts departed in 2016 to the new First Street Courthouse. The spring building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in February 2006 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012.
