History
The site has hosted Christian worship for more than a millennium. Between 1106 and 1538, it functioned as the church of Southwark Priory, an Augustinian foundation dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The name “Overie” derives from “over the river”—a reference to its location south of the Thames.
The Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century transformed the priory church into a parish church, rededicated to the Holy Saviour. It remained in the Diocese of Winchester until 1877, when administrative changes transferred the parish to the Diocese of Rochester. Cathedral status arrived only in 1905, following the creation of the Diocese of Southwark.
