Overview
The Museo del Suolo is at Pertosa, in the Province of Salerno, in Campania — in the Vallo di Diano, beside the Pertosa-Auletta caves. The archive entry calls it unique in Italy and with few counterparts elsewhere.
It was opened on 22 April 2016, the day the United Nations marks the Earth.
History
Its subject is the three metres that run down from the surface — the layer on which life on the planet depends. Beneath our feet, the museum argues, there is a tumultuous chemical, physical and biological activity on which the landscape we inhabit, the food we eat and our own survival all rest.
What you see
Fifteen hundred square metres of covered display, arranged as a passage through the layers of the earth and built for the five senses: the formation of soils, their relations with ecosystems, living communities and landscapes, and their long interaction with human societies.
A series of workshop activities allows visitors to observe, touch and handle the material.
