History
The Riga Small Guild itself traces its roots to 1352, when craftsmen separated from the Holy Spirit Guild to form their own organization. For more than five centuries, the guild maintained its status as a professional body distinct from the wealthier Riga Merchant (Large) Guild, founded in 1354.
The current building replaced an earlier structure on the same site, demolished in 1863. Architect Johann Felsko designed the new Neo-Gothic edifice, completed in 1866. A wing, originally constructed in 1855 as a poorhouse, was converted into a craftsmen school in 1901 and merged into the main complex.
The Small Guild itself was dissolved in 1936, succeeded by the Latvian Chamber of Craftsmen, which inherited both the organization’s mission and its building. Since 1944, the Small Guild has operated as the Latvian Trade Union Cultural Center, hosting cultural events and performances.

The building exemplifies Neo-Gothic design in its ornamental detailing and vertical emphasis. Two distinct wings compose the complex: the main section facing Amatu iela, unveiled in 1866, and the adjoining wing incorporated in 1901. The architectural language reflects the pride and prosperity of Riga’s guild system at its height.
