Sisodia Rani Garden and Palace

A tiered Rajput garden palace commissioned by Jaipur’s founding ruler as a gift for his second queen, adorned with Krishna murals and cascading fountains.

At a glance

Six kilometres south of Jaipur, this double-storeyed palace crowns a multi-level garden of fountains, watercourses and painted pavilions. The structure exemplifies 18th-century Rajput architectural ambition—intimate in scale yet elaborate in decoration.

History

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, founder of Jaipur, commissioned the palace in 1728 as a romantic gesture for his second wife. The queen descended from the Sisodia line of Suryavanshi (Sun dynasty) Rajputs, the ruling family of the Mewar region. Her lineage shaped the site’s name and cultural identity.

What you see

The palace occupies the uppermost terrace, its galleries and pavilions unified by intricate murals depicting episodes from Krishna’s life. Water features descend through tiered gardens in a composition balancing Mughal formality with Rajput aesthetic. Painted details throughout the pavilions reveal skilled artisan work of the period.

Cultural significance

The garden palace stands as testament to 18th-century Rajput patronage and the role of royal women in Jaipur’s cultural landscape. Its Krishna imagery reflects the devotional life of the court, while its engineering—the water systems and terraced layout—demonstrates advanced hydraulic knowledge.
