Singapore Art Museum

Singapore’s first fully dedicated contemporary visual arts museum, showcasing local and Southeast Asian artists across multiple venues.

At a glance

The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) operates across five galleries at Tanjong Pagar Distripark and partner venues throughout the city-state. It presents contemporary visual art with a focus on regional voices and international collaborations.

History

SAM opened in 1996 as Singapore’s first museum dedicated exclusively to contemporary visual arts. From its founding through 2019, the institution operated from two heritage buildings: the former Saint Joseph’s Institution on Bras Basah Road and the former Catholic High School on Queen Street. The museum has since expanded to its current multi-venue model.

Since 2011, SAM has organised the Singapore Biennale, a major contemporary art survey. In 2024, the museum began representing Singapore at the Venice Biennale.

What you see

The museum’s current home at Tanjong Pagar Distripark features five dedicated galleries. SAM also activates partner venues across Singapore, extending its presence beyond a single location and creating a distributed network for contemporary art presentation.

Cultural significance

SAM holds significance as Singapore’s pioneering institution for contemporary visual art, championing local and Southeast Asian artists on both national and international stages. Its role in organising the Singapore Biennale and representing Singapore at Venice positions it as a key player in regional contemporary art discourse.
