A private museum dedicated to Korea’s scientific heritage, housed in a two-story building within the Gyeongju Folk Craft Village.
At a glance
The Silla Arts and Science Museum presents the scientific achievements and cultural legacy of Korea’s Silla kingdom through thematic exhibition halls. Located in Ha-dong district, the museum occupies a multi-level structure with basement galleries and focuses on making Korean scientific history accessible to young visitors.
History
Established on 15 October 1988 by Seok U-il, the museum was founded with a specific educational mission: to help children and youths visiting Gyeongju understand the roots of Korean science. The choice of location within the Folk Craft Village reflects Gyeongju’s significance as a cultural centre and former capital of the Silla kingdom.
What you see
The building contains six exhibition halls organized by theme across two floors and a basement. The first floor houses seven subjects in its opening galleries. The basement displays a detailed model of Seokguram grotto, one of Gyeongju’s most important tangible cultural properties. The second floor features a full-scale bronze bell model from Sangwonsa temple, accompanied by information about traditional Korean bell-making techniques and processes.
Cultural significance
The museum bridges education and heritage preservation, offering insights into Silla-period scientific knowledge and craftsmanship. Its thematic approach—from general science subjects to specific masterworks like the Seokguram grotto and bronze bells—illustrates how technological and artistic achievement intertwined in Korea’s historical development.
