History
An earlier Schloss belonging to the Baroness von Stolzenau occupied the site at the beginning of the 19th century, surrounded by a substantial park. The present structure was constructed in 1868–69 following the demolition of its predecessor. Unlike many German castles, this residence never served as the seat of a ruling prince or nobility. After 1956 the building operated as a youth hostel until its closure on 1 December 2010. The castle has remained vacant since.
