Red Church

A striking early-twentieth-century Protestant chapel in Olomouc, now repurposed as an archive and research library, bearing witness to the city’s complex religious and linguistic history.

At a glance

The Red Church stands as a rare survivor of Olomouc’s German Protestant heritage. Built at the turn of the twentieth century for a German-speaking evangelical congregation, it underwent radical transformation after 1945—first passing to Czech Protestants, then to academic use. Today it preserves historical documents rather than worship.

History

Constructed between 1901 and 1902 by German architect Max Löwe, the church served the German Evangelical Church in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. It functioned as a place of worship for the local German-speaking Protestant community until World War II. Following the expulsion of Germans after 1945, the building was transferred to the Czech Protestant congregation. In 1959, it was handed to the university library, where it has remained ever since, now housing the archives of the Research Library.

What you see

Detailed architectural description is unavailable from current sources. The church’s name likely derives from distinctive exterior coloring or materials characteristic of early Moravian Protestant ecclesiastical design.

Cultural significance

The Red Church embodies a pivotal moment in Central European history—the displacement of German communities after World War II and the reshaping of religious and cultural institutions in post-war Czechoslovakia. Its conversion to archival use reflects the changing role of religious buildings in communist and post-communist societies.
