Savoy Hotel

A pioneering luxury hotel on the Strand that revolutionized hospitality in Britain, the Savoy opened in 1889 with technological innovations and service standards that set the benchmark for hotels worldwide.

At a glance

The Savoy stands as London’s first electrically lit hotel and arguably its most celebrated. Built by impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte with profits from Gilbert and Sullivan productions, it pioneered electric lifts, bathrooms in every room, and constant hot and cold running water. Today it remains one of the world’s most prestigious addresses.

History

Richard D’Oyly Carte opened the Savoy on 6 August 1889, launching the first of what would become the Savoy group of hotels and restaurants. Carte recruited César Ritz as manager and Auguste Escoffier as chef de cuisine, a partnership that established unprecedented standards in hotel service and cuisine. The hotel quickly became his most successful venture, attracting royalty, statesmen and cultural luminaries. Its resident bands—the Savoy Orpheans and Savoy Havana Band—became celebrated in their own right. Winston Churchill frequently brought his cabinet to lunch here, while guests have included Edward VII, Oscar Wilde, Enrico Caruso, Charlie Chaplin, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. The hotel is now managed by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts.

What you see

The Savoy comprises 267 guest rooms, each lavishly furnished. Panoramic views of the River Thames frame Savoy Place and the Thames Embankment. As a Grade II listed building, the hotel preserves its historic character while maintaining contemporary luxury standards and service.

Cultural significance

The Savoy represents a watershed in hotel history. By introducing electric lighting throughout, it demonstrated the practical application of new technology to hospitality. The combination of Ritz’s management philosophy and Escoffier’s culinary genius created a template for luxury service that influenced hotel design and operations globally. Its guest list reads as a roster of twentieth-century power, culture and celebrity. The hotel has been called “London’s most famous hotel.”
