History
Constructed in the mid-20th century, this church was commissioned by local bishop Luis Almarcha Hernández. Its most compelling feature—the entrance gate—originates from the monastery of San Pedro de Eslonza in nearby Gradefes, which had fallen into ruin. The gate itself dates to 1711 and was designed by architect Pedro Martínez de Cardeña.
What you see
The church’s façade presents a striking architectural statement. The entrance gate displays three superimposed orders: the first level features four Ionic columns mounted on pedestals, while the second employs Corinthian columns with narrower proportions. Circular windows flank the composition, with an additional window crowning the structure above a coat of arms.
Five niches punctuate the main façade, now empty but originally designed to house statues of saints. Two slender bell towers, contemporary with the 20th-century church building, rise on either side of the entrance, framing the imported Baroque gate.
Cultural significance
The church exemplifies an archival approach to conservation: rather than allowing the monastery’s gateway to deteriorate beyond recovery, it was carefully relocated and integrated into a new structure. This practice preserves a documented work by Pedro Martínez de Cardeña while creating a layered historical narrative within a single building.
