St. Isidore’s Basilica
A Catholic basilica in León housing the relics of Saint Isidore of Seville, where Europe’s first parliament convened in 1188.

Originally a tenth-century monastery dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, it was rededicated to Saint Isidore in 1063 following the translation of his relics from Seville. History
A monastery for Saint John the Baptist was erected on this site in the early tenth century. In 1063, with the agreement of Abbad II al-Mu’tadid, the Muslim ruler of Seville, the relics of Saint Isidore of Seville were brought to León and interred in the basilica. Isidore had been archbishop of Seville and the most celebrated academic and theologian of Visigothic Spain before the Arab invasions.
In 1188, the Cortes of León convened here—described by UNESCO and historian John Keane as the first example of modern parliamentarism in European history.

An equestrian statue of Saint Isidore, depicted as a Moor-slayer, dominates the facade alongside numerous other sculptures. The basilica’s design reflects Romanesque and later medieval Spanish architectural traditions.
