Overview
The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Oran domes the city center with Albert Ballu’s Romano-Byzantine design of 1913 – among the first great churches in reinforced concrete, its triple-arched front and mosaicked tympanum facing the boulevard of Camus’ plague-walked Oran. Since 1984 it serves as the regional library, reading rooms beneath the dome’s light.
History
European Oran – Spain’s old presidio turned France’s most pied-noir city – built the cathedral at its confident height; Camus set La Peste in its streets, the cathedral’s sermons in the novel’s heart. Independence’s exodus emptied the diocese; conversion to Bibliotheque Regionale preserved fabric and function – books where the faithful knelt, the secular afterlife colonial churches across Algeria found.
Architecture and Design
Ballu – Algeria’s chief architect, restorer of Timgad – paired Byzantine domes with concrete’s new spans; the campanile and cupolas mark the skyline between Santa Cruz’s mountain fort and the port. Stacks and catalogues now thread the aisles’ shade.
Cultural significance
The cathedral-library condenses Oran’s layered city – Spanish, Ottoman, French, Algerian – and literature’s map of it; heritage advocates cite the reuse as the model for the colonial corpus’ integration.
Visiting today
The library admits the public on working days; the facade and place compose with the nearby theatre’s belle-epoque front. Santa Cruz’s panorama crowns the Oran visit.
Getting there
Central Oran’s boulevards converge nearby; the tram’s city-center stops serve the quarter from the station.
