History
Emperor Augustus established Emerita Augusta in 25 BC as a settlement for retired legionnaires, positioning it as the capital of the Lusitania imperial province. This province encompassed most of Portugal and the western-central regions of Spain, making Mérida a crucial administrative center. The construction of a second forum in 50 AD reflected the city’s growing importance and prosperity.
