History
The castle was founded in 1330 as a fortified outpost. Between 1497 and 1515, it underwent thorough reconstruction that reshaped its core structure. When Swedish forces seized the fortress in the 17th century, they added spacious annexes in 1641, reflecting new military and administrative needs. Continual augmentation and reconstruction continued through the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 1930s, architect Eižens Laube undertook renovation work. The Latvian government designated the castle its official residence in 1938, a status it retains today.
