Overview
The Raj Mandir is the temple its name claims – a cinema conceived as celebration, its scalloped cream facade like piped icing and its auditorium a swooping fantasia of chandeliers and star-lights. Opened in 1976 after a decade’s perfectionist construction, the 1,300-seat single screen remains the essential Bollywood experience: tickets in five classes from stalls to Emerald boxes, and audiences who sing.
History
Jaipur businessman Mehtab Chandra Golcha commissioned Namjoshi – the late master of Indian cinema Moderne – to outdo every picture palace in Asia; the gamble inaugurated with Charas in 1976 paid in legend. While multiplexes killed the single screens, the Raj Mandir’s shows kept selling out, making it a heritage attraction where tourists book seats beside Jaipuri families for the full masala-movie rite.
Architecture and Design
The lobby rises through pastel galleries under a ceiling of moulded curves; the auditorium’s asymmetric sweep conceals the projection of stars in its firmament dome, with fragrance dispensed through the air-conditioning. Namjoshi’s zigzag-meringue idiom, polished nightly for half a century, survives intact to the door handles.
Cultural significance
The Raj Mandir is world cinema’s great surviving picture palace in working order – the place critics and filmmakers cite for what moviegoing as communal joy means. For Jaipur it ranks with the Hawa Mahal among the pink city’s landmarks.
