History
Construction began in 73 AD under the direction of Emperor Vespasian, transforming the urban centre of the Roman city. The forum functioned as Tarraco’s administrative, commercial and religious heart for nearly four centuries. Use of the complex continued into the 5th century before the city’s role diminished with Rome’s decline in Hispania.
The sacred precinct was eventually superseded by Christian structures, including the cathedral that now stands on what was once the worship area of the forum.
