Pilgrimage Church of Saint John of Nepomuk

A mathematical masterpiece of Baroque design, this pilgrimage church crowns Zelená hora with symbolic geometry and Gothic reverie—the final vision of architect Johann Santini Aichel.

At a glance

Built between 1719 and 1727 on a hilltop near the Moravia-Bohemia border, this church honors Saint John of Nepomuk. Santini designed furnishings and every architectural detail himself, creating a work of unusual complexity for its era—one where the number 5 governs the layout and proportions, establishing what the UNESCO citation calls an “independent spatial reality.”

History

Construction began in 1719 after the Roman Catholic Church declared Saint John’s tongue incorruptible. The site held personal significance: John had received his early education at Zelená hora. Though consecrated immediately after his beatification in 1720, builders continued until 1727. A major fire, roughly fifty years later, prompted alterations to the roof’s shape.

What you see

Santini fused Borrominiesque Baroque with Gothic references in both structure and ornament—a rare synthesis for the early eighteenth century. Mathematical ratios underpin every proportion, with five as the dominant number. The church’s furnishings, conceived by Santini, embody this symbolic order throughout.

Cultural significance

As Santini’s final work, the church represents the apex of his spatial philosophy. Its gothicizing features—unusual in Baroque context—anticipate later sensibilities. UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site in 1994, citing its extraordinary integration of mathematical ratios and symbolic meaning.
