Pantheon

A monumental Roman temple dedicated to all divinities, the Pantheon stands in the heart of Rome’s historic center as one of antiquity’s best-preserved architectural achievements.

At a glance

The Pantheon rises 43 meters above the Pigna district, its iconic domed interior and classical portico dominating the Piazza della Rotonda. Built to honor gods past, present, and future, the structure exemplifies Roman engineering at its peak.

History

Marco Vipsanio Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus, founded the original temple in 27 BC. The building standing today was reconstructed and dedicated in 126 AD, representing a later phase of Roman construction that improved upon its predecessor.

What you see

Roman architecture defines every element. The Pantheon’s most striking feature is its massive dome, an engineering marvel that has influenced classical design for nearly two millennia. The frontal portico with its Corinthian columns provides ceremonial grandeur, while the interior rotunda creates an awe-inspiring spatial experience beneath the open oculus that crowns the dome.

Cultural significance

The Pantheon represents the pinnacle of Roman architectural and engineering ambition. Its survival—largely intact through the centuries—makes it an invaluable document of ancient Roman religious and civic life. The building has profoundly shaped Western architectural tradition and remains a touchstone for designers and scholars worldwide.
