Ostia Antica Archaeological Park
The ancient port city of Rome, whose ruins sprawl across 150 hectares near the mouth of the Tiber River, preserving exceptional testimony to daily life in the Roman imperial world.
At a glance
Ostia Antica stands as one of the world’s largest archaeological sites, rivalling Pompeii in scope and significance. Serving as Rome’s principal port and commercial hub, the city developed from a modest 7th-century BC settlement into a thriving centre of trade and administration. Today, excavated remains reveal not only grand public monuments but also residential houses and productive structures that illuminate the texture of ancient urban existence.
History
According to tradition, Ostia was founded in the 7th century BC by Anco Marzio, king of Rome. The city flourished particularly during the imperial era, becoming essential to Rome’s survival as the hub of the annona—the vast supply network that provisioned the capital with grain and other goods. After the construction of the Claudian and Trajanic ports, Ostia retained its role as a residential and administrative centre, though its commercial importance gradually shifted. The port facility of Porto eventually superseded it, and Ostia entered rapid decline in late antiquity, falling into abandonment during the early medieval period.
What you see
The archaeological park encompasses public monuments, multi-storey apartment buildings, shops, warehouses, and small temples—a cross-section of Roman urban planning and domestic life. Only 40 per cent of the city has been excavated; more than half remains buried beneath the soil. Systematic excavation began in the early 19th century and continues to reveal the city’s layered history and the daily routines of its inhabitants.
Cultural significance
Ostia Antica provides unparalleled insight into Roman commercial and social structures. The preservation of ordinary dwellings, workshops, and administrative buildings—alongside temples and public spaces—offers scholars and visitors a complete picture of how the empire sustained itself through trade and logistics. The site ranks among Italy’s most visited archaeological attractions, drawing over 330,000 annual visitors.
