Old City (Altstadt)

The medieval heart of Bern stands on a narrow hill encircled by the river Aare, its compact layout and sandstone facades virtually unchanged since the Renaissance. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, it remains one of Europe’s finest examples of a living medieval city.

At a glance

Bern’s Old City occupies a defensible hilltop bounded on three sides by the Aare river. Though devastated by fire in 1405 and substantially rebuilt, it has preserved its medieval street plan and character through five centuries of change, including significant construction in the eighteenth century.

History

Construction of the Old City began in the twelfth century and continued through the fifteenth, creating a compact urban layout that would prove remarkably durable. A catastrophic fire in 1405 destroyed much of the settlement, but reconstruction in sandstone strengthened its permanence and gave it much of its present appearance. The eighteenth century brought substantial new building, yet the medieval framework endured.

What you see

The Old City contains Switzerland’s tallest minster alongside other churches, several bridges, and an exceptional series of Renaissance fountains. Sandstone buildings line the historic streets, many designated as Swiss Cultural Properties of National Significance. The entire precinct demonstrates how a medieval city can evolve while retaining its core identity and spatial integrity.

Cultural significance

UNESCO recognized the Old City as a World Heritage Site for its intact medieval core and its exemplary approach to integrating modern governance and life into a historic fabric. It houses the federal, cantonal, and municipal government seats—a continuity of civic function that speaks to its enduring importance. The city serves as a model for sustainable heritage preservation.
