Overview
The Obispado crowns its hill over Monterrey with the northeast’s finest baroque facade – Bishop Verger’s 1787 palace and chapel, built as famine relief works, whose estipite portal of carved cantera faces the Cerro de la Silla across the valley. Since 1956 it houses the Museo Regional de Nuevo Leon’s history of the desert north.
History
Every war wanted the hill: American artillery took it in 1846’s Battle of Monterrey, French and Republicans traded it in the 1860s, and Pancho Villa’s 1915 assault left the walls’ bullet harvest. Between sieges it served as seminary, barracks, and pesthouse; restoration made its salas the region’s memory – colonial ranching to industrial boom.
Architecture and Design
The chapel’s churrigueresque portal concentrates ornament in the desert manner – one jewel on plain mass; barrel vaults and thick walls answer heat and cannon alike. The esplanade’s flag and viewpoints serve the city’s photographers nightly.

The Obispado is Monterrey’s historic conscience above its corporate skyline – baroque piety, battlefield, and museum binding the industrial capital to its frontier past.
Visiting today
The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday; sunset from the esplanade frames the Silla’s saddle. The Macroplaza and Fundidora park complete the city’s arc below.
Getting there
Taxis climb from the Purisima district in minutes; the hill rises west of the center off Padre Mier.
