Overview

The Great Cave of Niah opens a 60-metre mouth in Borneo’s rainforest limestone – the chamber where the Deep Skull of c. 55,000 years ago anchored island Southeast Asia’s human story, and where the Painted Cave’s red boat-coffins ferried the dead millennia later. UNESCO’s 2024 inscription spans the karst’s archaeology and the living birds’-nest economy on its soaring poles.

History

Tom Harrisson’s 1958 excavation hit the skull below the West Mouth’s hearths – tropical foragers processing toxic plants and hunting canopy game through the ice ages’ span. Neolithic cemeteries, the death-ship murals, and Iban-Penan memory layer the karst; swiftlet-nest gatherers still climb bamboo poles to the roof’s dark – harvest rights generations old.

Architecture and Design

Nature’s vaults dwarf any built nave; boardwalks cross guano plains under nest-pole forests to the Painted Cave’s gallery. The archaeology shelters and the museum at the river entrance interpret the sequence.

Cultural significance

Niah proves the rainforest no barrier but a home of early modern humans – revising cold-steppe biases of the origins map – and keeps harvest tradition inside the monument, heritage worked daily.

Visiting today

The park’s 4 km plankwalk reaches the caves (headlamp advised); museum and longhouse homestays serve the visit. Miri city lies 90 minutes north.

Getting there

Fly to Miri (from KL or Kuching), then road to Niah junction and the park’s river crossing.
