History
The institution was founded in 1923, establishing itself as a centre for scientific education and public engagement. The current building, developed from a sketch Renzo Piano made in 1990 and opened in 1997, represents a significant investment in modern museum architecture and visitor experience.
What you see
From across the water the building is often read as a ship’s prow, but that is not what Renzo Piano drew. The museum stands on the roof of the IJ Tunnel, and the curvature of the tunnel foundation inspired the curved shape of the building itself: in a mirror image of the traffic descending underground, the copper-green volume appears to rise out of the water. The roof carries a public square planted with more than 75 species of flowers and plants, and inside Piano kept the spaces deliberately plain — a concept he called the “noble factory” — so that nothing distracts from the exhibitions.
