History
The museum’s most celebrated artifact is The Great Dharani Sutra of Immaculate and Pure Light, the oldest known wooden slab print in the world. Discovered in 1966, this eighth-century Buddhist text demonstrates Korea’s advanced printing techniques. The collection also includes a replica of Jikji, created in 1377 during the Goryeo Dynasty and recognized as the world’s oldest existing book produced by movable metal type—a technology Korea pioneered before Gutenberg’s innovations in Europe.

Displays showcase Yongbieocheonga (Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven) and Worin cheongangjigok (Songs of the Moon’s Reflection on a Thousand Rivers), among the earliest works printed in the Korean alphabet Hangul. Traditional instruments—including the janggu (pinched double-headed drum), daegeum (large transverse bamboo flute), and buk (drum)—are presented via interactive media arts systems. Garments from the Joseon Dynasty, Buddhist and Confucian artifacts, and examples of daily Korean life complete the exhibition.
