Monumento agli Ex Internati e Vagone della Memoria — Pescantina (Mirko Vucetich)

Between 1945 and 1947, as the survivors of the Nazi camps came home through the plain north of Verona, the population of Pescantina took in and fed something like seven hundred thousand people. The monument by Mirko Vucetich, inaugurated on 25 September 1966, stands for that, and for nothing else.

Beside it a railway wagon has been placed permanently, holding photographs and documents of the return of the deportees after their imprisonment — the *Vagone della Memoria*. On 25 April 2007 Pescantina received the Medaglia d’Oro al merito civile for what its inhabitants had done twenty years before the monument existed.

It is the largest and latest of Vucetich’s works in the Veneto, and the one where the subject and the place are inseparable: you cannot move the monument, because the monument is about here.
