History
The lake’s significance emerged suddenly in 1864, when Neolithic pile dwellings were discovered in its waters. These submerged remains represent some of Europe’s earliest human settlements, preserved by waterlogged conditions that prevent decay. The discovery placed Mondsee among Austria’s most archaeologically valuable sites.
