A literature museum devoted to the Kyiv-born Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov, housed in a restored late-19th-century mansion where he lived and created some of his most celebrated works.

The museum opened in May 1991 to mark the 100th anniversary of Bulgakov’s birth. It occupies No. 13 Andriivskyi Descent, a building erected in 1888 and designed by architect N. Gardenin. The collection comprises nearly 2,500 pieces, including the writer’s belongings, manuscripts, books, postcards, and photographs.
History
Commissioned in February 1989, the museum underwent thorough renovation before opening to the public. The house was preserved through the Soviet era by Inna Konchakovskaia (1902–85), daughter of a property owner and a central figure in Bulgakov’s novel The White Guard.
Bulgakov’s 1925 novel contains vivid references to Andriivskyi Descent and uses the street address as it appears on the current museum plaque. The atmosphere of the rooms reflects his multifaceted life: schoolboy, medical student, family physician, and writer.
What you see
The building’s exterior bears a memorial plaque with Bulgakov’s portrait. Its interior has been arranged to evoke the domestic and creative spaces of the writer’s life, displaying period furnishings and personal effects alongside manuscripts and correspondence related to works including The Master and Margarita and Theatre Love Story.
Cultural significance
The museum preserves the legacy of one of Russian literature’s most influential modernists. Bulgakov’s connection to Kyiv remains contested; following the 2022 Russian invasion, some Ukrainian voices questioned whether he should be commemorated as a Ukrainian writer. Museum leadership and the National Writers’ Union have held differing positions on the institution’s future.
