Memorial Museum of Nadežda and Rastko Petrović

A intimate family museum preserving the artistic and literary legacy of three generations of Serbian cultural figures in a restored house from the Professors’ colony.

At a glance

This memorial museum occupies a family residence built between 1928 and 1935 in Belgrade’s Professors’ colony. It houses the collected works and personal effects of painter Nadežda Petrović, writer Rastko Petrović, and their father Mito Petrović, a prominent 19th-century writer and scholar. The building itself is architecturally significant as a specimen of interwar residential design.

History

The house belonged to Ljubica Luković, sister of Nadežda and Rastko Petrović and herself a notable artist. She assembled and donated the family’s extensive archive to the National Museum in Belgrade, creating the foundation of this memorial collection. Declared a cultural monument in 1974, the museum closed for nearly four decades before undergoing comprehensive renovation. It officially reopened on May 15, 2025.

What you see

The house exemplifies 1930s Belgrade residential architecture, constructed during a period of cultural flourishing. Its modest yet dignified design reflects the intellectual character of the Professors’ colony, a planned neighborhood housing academics and artists. The original structure and surrounding land remain intact as the museum’s fixed assets.

Cultural significance

Nadežda Petrović (1873–1915) was a pioneering Serbian painter; Rastko Petrović (1898–1949) was an influential modernist writer. Their father Mito Petrović (1852–1911) was a distinguished writer and scholar. Together, they represent three generations of Serbian intellectual and artistic achievement. The museum preserves this family legacy through original paintings, correspondence, and personal objects that illuminate both individual creativity and domestic life.
