Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection

A compact museum of Serbian and Yugoslav modernism, assembled by a diplomat and devoted to the artists of the interwar period.

At a glance

This public art museum in Novi Sad preserves paintings, sculptures, and tapestries by 37 Serbian and Yugoslav artists, predominantly from the 1920s and 1930s. The collection spans 185 works, all gathered by a single discerning collector whose vision shaped an important record of early 20th-century Balkan modernism.

History

Pavle Beljanski, a Serbian diplomat and art patron, assembled his collection over many years. In November 1957, he donated the entire holdings to the Serbian people—an act of cultural generosity that secured the works for public access. Beljanski continued to acquire and contribute additional pieces until his death, deepening the collection’s scope and significance. The museum opened its doors to the public on 22 October 1961.

What you see

The collection comprises carefully selected works across painting, sculpture, and textile art. Each piece reflects the formal innovations and intellectual currents of interwar Yugoslavia—a pivotal moment when Serbian artists engaged with European modernism while developing distinct regional voices.

Cultural significance

The memorial collection stands as a vital repository of early 20th-century Serbian and Yugoslav artistic identity. By preserving work from the interwar years, it documents a transformative era when artists navigated modernism, nationalism, and the social upheavals of the post-First World War Balkans. Beljanski’s donation ensured these voices would endure.
