Overview
The Manila Hotel opened on the Fourth of July 1912 at the seaward edge of Rizal Park – the social capitol of the American Philippines, designed by Burnham-plan architect William Parsons in white Mission style with the green-tiled roofs of its later wings facing the famous bay sunset.
History
General Douglas MacArthur lived in the penthouse as Military Advisor from 1935 to 1941; the war he left to fight returned through the hotel – Japanese officers’ quarters, then a battleground in the 1945 liberation’s carnage, burning as MacArthur watched his old home through field glasses. Rebuilt and serially refreshed, it has hosted the century’s pens and presidencies: Hemingway, the Beatles’ uneasy 1966 stay, every Philippine inauguration ball.
Architecture and Design
The lobby’s Philippine mahogany columns, capiz-shell chandeliers, and the long gallery to the bayview lawns set the national-romantic tone the 1970s tower extension respects. The MacArthur Suite museum keeps the general’s era; the Champagne Room’s crystal palms are old Manila’s surviving glamour.
Cultural significance
The hotel is the Philippines’ memory palace – American colonial promise, war’s ruin, independence’s pageants – moored beside Rizal’s monument and Intramuros’ walls. Its sunset terrace remains the establishment’s meeting shore.

Lobby, restaurants, and the history-laden corridors welcome visitors; pair with Intramuros and the national museums across the park.
Getting there
The hotel adjoins Rizal Park’s Quirino grandstand; taxis and the LRT’s UN Avenue station serve the district.
