History
Built in the 18th century during Dutch colonial rule, this structure originally served as the residence and administrative center for Dutch officials. After the British assumed control of Malaya, it transitioned to a colonial administrative office. Following Malaysia’s independence in 1957, the building housed the Malacca Water Board for decades.
In 2000, the Department of Museum and Antiquities undertook a comprehensive restoration to return the building to its original colonial form. The museum opened four years later under the administration of the Antiquity and Museum Association.
