History
Designed by Walter Tapper and sculpted by Laurence Arthur Turner, the memorial was unveiled on 27 March 1921 by John Maud, Bishop of Kensington. It originally stood on the footpath outside Christ Church. The Great Storm of 1987 inflicted serious damage, but restoration and relocation to Lancaster Gate followed in 2002 as part of a street improvement scheme. The restored cross was rededicated on Armistice Day, 11 November 2002. A memorial service resumed at the site in 2016.

Below this rises the sculptural heart: eight niches contain figures representing both national and universal Christian virtues. Saint George represents England; Saint Louis, France. Six warrior saints—Maurice, Longinus, Victor, Adrian, Florian and Eustace—embody the broader Christian military tradition across medieval Christendom.
